Charger Chatter

November 6, 2026

Principal's Corner

Good afternoon, JW Families,

As we move through November, we have some wonderful opportunities for our JWMS community to come together, give back, and support the well-being of our students.

Our JWMS Holiday Food Drive is underway and will continue through November 20th! We are collecting nonperishable food donations to benefit our local soup kitchen and food pantry. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed! We encourage families who are able to participate to help us make a positive difference in our community. Every donation makes a difference!

Additionally, on November 10th, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Youth Behavioral Health Survey, in collaboration with the Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau. This survey will help gather valuable feedback about student experiences, perspectives, and well-being. We appreciate this partnership and our shared commitment to supporting the social and emotional well-being of all JWMS students.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Have a wonderful weekend!

Carolyn Gbunblee

A note from our Dean of Students

Student Pickups During the School Day

We ask that families plan their arrival time when picking up students during the school day. Please allow the office time to contact your child when you arrive. To minimize missed instructional time, we ask that students not be called to the office before a parent arrives. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

7th Grade Science Spotlight

Jack-o’-Lantern Circuit Challenge!

Last week, our seventh-grade scientists put their knowledge of electricity to work in a friendly competition: Which team could create the brightest jack-o’-lantern?
Working within a $13 classroom budget, students planned their designs and made decisions about purchasing batteries, bulbs, and other circuit components. They applied their understanding of series and parallel circuits and included a working switch to control their lights.
The challenge brought together science, budgeting, and teamwork. Through trial and error, students troubleshot connections, compared bulb brightness, and revised their designs. They practiced treating setbacks as opportunities to test another idea.
Our classroom was full of energy as students combined creativity with engineering—bringing their circuit knowledge to light!

Tech Ed Happenings

The woodshop unit is underway in Tech Ed! Students are excited to get hands-on and are enjoying the aroma of freshly cut lumber. Safety is our top priority! Students must arrive wearing closed-toe, closed-heel shoes, avoid overly baggy clothing, and be prepared to secure long hair and remove dangling jewelry. Charged Chromebooks are still essential for design thinking activities and online safety checks. Our first three power tools are the drill press, belt sander, and jigsaw. We appreciate your support in reminding students to wear appropriate footwear so they can safely and fully participate. Be on the lookout for their handmade pegboard games coming home soon!

🏐 Club Volleyball 🏐

pic
Coed Club Volleyball got off to a great start on Monday with an excellent turnout! Captains were selected, and they had the opportunity to choose their own teams. After the first week of play, the games have already been very competitive, making for an exciting start to the season. Club Volleyball takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursday and ends at 4pm. This club ends in time for students to take the late bus if needed.

The club will continue through November 19. Thank you to everyone who has come out to play and helped make this club such a success. We look forward to the rest of the season!

JW Staff Highlight

Meet our JW Paraeducator, Mr. Dan Warren! We asked Mr. Warren to share a little bit about himself and this is what he had to say:

What do you like to do on the weekends?
I like to go on hikes/walks with my dogs.  I like going to farmers’ markets, spending time with my friends, going out to eat and hanging out at home with my pets.

Name a role model who has inspired you in your career.
Eileen Mills was a wonderful fourth grade teacher I worked with when I started as a
Paraeducator in Regional School District #17 twenty four years ago.

What led you to work in this field?
My father was a high school principal, my sister is an elementary school, and my uncle was a high school science teacher so it kind of runs in the family. A good friend helped get me back into education when her school needed a part time paraeducator and I have been working as a para ever since.

What energizes and drains you when you're at work?
Humor usually energizes me at work and negativity is what drains me the most.

Describe one of your favorite work memories.
I have many favorite work memories. I loved last year’s 7th grade field trip to the Science Museum and the Park View Market. When I worked in the life skills classroom, I loved the Thanksgiving Feast the students would prepare, and the shenanigans in eighth-grade U.S. History with spray tans and baby hands a couple of years ago.

Tell me a fact that most people don't know about you.
One fact is that I also work at a restaurant after school.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I am a pretty good cook and pretty good at gardening when I have time.

Do you have any pets? What are they like?
Yes, I have four golden retrievers and a cat.  My cat, Phoebe, thinks she is a dog and she loves to sleep on top of the dogs. My dogs, Georgie, Gunnar, Ivy and Sulley, love to play with toys, run in the yard, follow me everywhere and sleep on the couch. They are all very sweet and great companions.

Have you lived in a different state or country?
I have lived in Scotland, Ohio and Massachusetts.
