Charger Chatter

September 25, 2026

Principal's Corner

Good afternoon, JW Families,

We enjoyed coming together for our first Town Hall of the year! One highlight was talking about our Spirit Banner, a special source of JW pride. Over the years, staff members have taken the banner along on their travels and snapped photos, sharing our school spirit wherever they go.

On spirit days, teams have the opportunity to win the banner by showing the most school spirit. We look forward to seeing our students get creative, cheer one another on, and take pride in being part of our JW community!

With the possibility of a nor’easter this weekend, we hope everyone stays safe, warm, and dry. We look forward to welcoming students back for another week of learning and connection.

Have a restful weekend!

Carolyn Gbunblee

2026–2027 Required Annual Notifications

The 2026-2027 Required Annual Notifications to Parents and Students are now available. Families are asked to review the notifications and complete the brief acknowledgment survey by September 30, 2026.

Families with children attending more than one of our schools will receive a notification from each school and should complete a separate acknowledgment for each. Paper copies are also available in the JWMS Main Office, and an electronic copy will be available on the district website. Thank you for taking a few moments to review this important information and confirm receipt.

JW Jazz Band

The JW Jazz Band will be starting soon for the year!  JW Jazz meets every Wednesday morning at 6:45 AM, and rehearses until homeroom starts.  Any student who plays a band instrument is invited to participate.  They simply need to email Mrs. Traver that they are interested in joining!  We are also looking for students who play piano, guitar, or bass guitar.  (Please note: some instruments are limited to a small number of players.  There may be auditions for piano, guitar, bass, or drums, depending on the number of students who are interested.)

🎭JW Musical 🎭

Is your student interested in being part of the JW Musical?  Our show will be announced NEXT WEEK!  Any students interested in being involved with cast and/or crew should sign up for the “JW Drama 2027” Google Classroom using the code: mbb7akem.  This is not an official sign-up or full commitment to the show.  It is simply to gain more info as it becomes available.  Email Mrs. Traver at ltraver@reg4.k12.ct.us if you have any questions.

Missed the 7th Grade Open House❓

📸 Retake Picture Day 📸

Retake Picture Day at JWMS will be held on Friday, November 6th.
Ordering information has already been sent home with students and there are additional order sheets located in the office.

🚌 Bus Change Reminder 🚌

For the safety of all students, any changes to a student’s regular bus or bus stop must be communicated to the school office in advance. This includes requests for a student to ride a different bus or get off at a different stop.
All bus change requests must be received by the office by email, phone call, or written note from a parent/guardian.
Please note that students may not make after-school transportation plans while at school and then call home to request a bus change. Bus changes cannot be arranged by students during the school day.
We appreciate your help in ensuring that all transportation changes are communicated properly and in advance so we can keep our students safe. Thank you for your cooperation!

John Winthrop Middle School Athletic Updates

Girls Soccer: :The girls soccer team finished 1-1 this week. We played a tight game against a strong HK team and then went on to beat Westbrook 5-0. Reagan Abel had two goals on the week and Ava Bauer played a central role in our victory over Westbrook with a 2nd minute goal and an assist to go along with it. Great job girls!
Next week the girls have two games, one versus Hale Ray at home at 4 pm then we head up for a long trip up to Portland on Thursday!

Boys Soccer: Congratulations to the JW Boys Soccer Team! ⚽The team finished off the week with a 1-1-0 record. They battled to a 1-1 draw against HK and then bounced back with a strong win over Westbrook. Boys, great job! Keep working hard, playing together, and building on the momentum. Way to go, JW!
There are two more games next week:
Wednesday 9/30 at Nathan Hale Ray 4:00 start time
Thursday 10/01 Portland, Home 4:00 start time

Cross Country: The boys and girls cross country teams had a meet at Haddam-Killingworth on Wednesday vs. H-K and North Branford and all runners did a fabulous job.  Both teams beat North Branford, but unfortunately lost to H-K.  We had a number of outstanding performances, including Owen Graham’s 1st  place finish in the boys race and Emma Lopez’s 2nd place finish in the girls race.  Congratulations to Charlie Barter, Colin Comerford, Kathleen Dailey and Kaya Lowden, who all improved their paces from previous weeks.  We look forward to our first home meet next Wednesday, September 30th against Eliot and hope you can all come out and support our runners!
